During plant operation suspended particles removed by the filters are trapped in the filter media.  The filters are cleaned by "backwashing" a process which reverses the flow of water through the filters and flushes the particles from the media.

The Backwash Pump supplies finished water from the Clearwell for this purpose.   This pump is rated at 100 horsepower and supplies 2228 Gallons per Minute.
