After injection of chemicals for disinfection, coagulation and pH adjustment, water enters the bottom of the pre-treatment cone.

As the water flows upward solid particals cling together.   The increasing diameter of the cone allows the water to move slower toward the top and the heavier solid particals are retained in the cone.
